“My LIMP Straightened My WALK”

Genesis 32:22-32, “But during the night he got up and took his two wives, his two maidservants, and his eleven children and crossed the ford of the Jabbok. He got them safely across the brook along with all his possessions. But Jacob stayed behind by himself, and a man wrestled with him until daybreak. When the man saw that he couldn’t get the best of Jacob as they wrestled, he deliberately threw Jacob’s hip out of joint. The man said, “Let me go; it’s daybreak.” Jacob said, “I’m not letting you go ’til you bless me.” The man said, “What’s your name?” He answered, “Jacob.”The man said, “But no longer. Your name is no longer Jacob. From now on it’s Israel (God-Wrestler); you’ve wrestled with God and you’ve come through.” Jacob asked, “And what’s your name?” The man said, “Why do you want to know my name?” And then, right then and there, he blessed him. Jacob named the place Peniel (God’s Face) because, he said, “I saw God face-to-face and lived to tell the story!” The sun came up as he left Peniel, limping because of his hip. (This is why Israelites to this day don’t eat the hip muscle; because Jacob’s hip was thrown out of joint.)” (MSG)

One of the houses I grew up in is located in Roosevelt, NY (Long Island). I lived most of my Junior and Senior High School Years and early adult years on East Greenwich Avenue. I absolutely loved my childhood home. One of my favorite rooms in the house was the living room because of the huge fireplace that my dad would light. In fact, many of my favorite memories of my dad are attached to that fireplace. You see, it was where he watched his westerns, sports, entertained his friends, relaxed with a beer after work, where he roasted his favorite peanuts and yams, and when we didn’t have enough money to pay for gas/oil, it was the fireplace that dad would light and keep lit all throughout the night, as he would sleep on the sofa to make sure nothing ever happened to us while it was lit for so long. Not to mention, it was also where me and dad enjoyed many talks that no one will ever know about that blessed my life forever. So, needless to say, in front of that fireplace was my favorite place.

And just because I like you guys so much, I’ll even let you in on a little secret, I loved that fireplace so much I got a sharp stone and engraved my initials in it! Don’t laugh!

Anyway, many years later, after my family moved out, several other families have moved in and out of it over the years. But there was actually one day that I was back in the old neighborhood, when I had an extremely bold moment. I was passing my old childhood home, and would have kept passing by, if it hadn’t been for the family that was outside in the yard relaxing. I asked my girlfriend to pull over for a second. I got out and went up to the man and woman who were sitting on the front steps. I introduced myself, and explained my attachment to the house. They were extremely kind, warm and inviting. They let me ramble on forever about many of my crazy memories about the house. And then they would point to varying things and ask about them, and I would fill them in on why this was like that and so on. But it was the man who asked the question that made me smile. He asked, “what do you love most about this house?” I explained to him my love of the fireplace and why. And as strange as it sounds, when they invited me in to see the fireplace, I went!

No, this is not advisable people! You do not enter a stranger’s home alone! But suffice it to say, I did.

And to the left where the living room was, and still was, held my favorite thing, the fireplace! After all these years, it was still there! It was still white, but you could tell it was painted over. Then, the woman said, “while we have you here, maybe you can tell us if these initials mean anything to you?” I asked her, “what initials?” And right at the base of the fireplace, was engraved “S.Y.J.F.” I couldn’t help but to break out in a huge grin, which led to a loud laugh. However, the frowning of their confused brows let me know that they thought I might have had some sort of mental break. So I quickly explained. “I loved this fireplace so much that I engraved my initials in it. So if we ever left it, technically, it would still be mine. The initials stand for Shermaine Yvette Jones Franklin, my name.” Then…they laughed with me, and said, “I can’t believe it, after all these years, the initials you carved in it so long ago are still here!

This wonderful memory reminded me of Jacob. You’ll find me at Genesis 32, beginning at verse 24. Jacob has been having a wrestling match with someone who turns out to be divine. And verse 24 says, “So Jacob was left alone, and a Man [came and] wrestled with him until daybreak.” (AMP). Finally the fight ends when that Man touches the socket of Jacob’s hip so that his hip was wrenched as he wrestled with the man.

Later, Jacob knows Who he met there. He called the place Peniel (the face of God), saying, “For I have seen God face to face, yet my life has not been snatched away.” Now the sun rose on him as he passed Penuel (Peniel), and he was limping because of his hip” (vss. 30-31 AMP) Jacob struggled with God. He’d actually wrestled with Him his whole life. But at this brook he goes for God’s full blessing. God changes him from Jacob, the cheat, and He changes his name to Israel, Prince with God. In fact, the whole nation will be named after him! God forgave Jacob. God transformed Jacob, and He’s still doing that with “Jacobs” today. Thank You Jesus!
But note this: Even though the struggle with God was over, Jacob carried a life-long reminder of his struggle – the limp! Past sins were forgiven, the man was changed, but as happens so often, he’d struggled with God and that left a mark on him the rest of his life!

Which made me think of my childhood fireplace. My initials engraved so many years ago, and yet, even after many things and people have changed in the home, the mark still remained. In a way, that’s a picture of how sin is. Even though the sin is long behind us, long forgiven, often the consequences, the marks of our sin are there for years to come. Truth is, sin is cruel. And you and I were once its slave, and we’re free now, but we still carry some of the scars of how our slave master treated us! And we always will…yet, believe it or not, sometimes, that’s not a completely bad thing.

We need to remember what sin does, because often it’s those scars, those lasting consequences that will deter us from leaving God’s way again! Now, forgiveness comes quickly when we bring our sin to the cross of Jesus, but it doesn’t come cheaply; it cost Him His life! But the ready availability of forgiveness should not make us forget the sometimes continuing consequences of sin; the limp that is there long after our struggle with God is behind us.

Since my childhood home with my favorite fireplace, I’ve moved a few times. The years have gone on. I’ve had children, gotten married, went to school, got saved, entered ministry, started working for the government. In other words, my life has been on a long journey and often on many rough roads. And even with all of that time elapsed in between, the initials, the engraving, the scar, the mark, is still there on that old fireplace! And that’s just like sin! It loves to remind us of what we did, when, where, why, with who, and how often. And it does it to keep us living under a dark cloud as though we no longer deserve the Sun or the Son.

And that makes me think of four R’s that explain some of the lasting scars/marks of sin that we need to be daily mindful of:

  1. REPUTATION – the damage to your reputation can last a long time. Sometimes it feels like it will take forever to redeem yourself. And it certainly doesn’t help when you have people who know about your sin and how badly you messed up. They will revisit your past on your behalf, just so you don’t forget. It’s hard when you’ve tarnished your own name, and now have the responsibility to polish it again. Remember this, it takes but a moment to tear apart your own reputation, but it often takes many a years to rebuild and reestablish it again.
  2. REGRETS – which are often there for years. You go through the grueling process of thoughts such as “I should’ve; I could’ve; I didn’t; but; why; if only I could just go back; if only I could do it all over againRegret is a tough word to get out of your vocabulary. In fact, by definition it means “to feel or express sorrow, repentance, or disappointment over.” It’s Old French Origin “regreter” literally means “lament the dead.” And isn’t that often what we find ourselves doing? Regretting old (and even dead things). Long after they’ve been done, with no way to un-do them, we still hold years, decades and sometimes a lifetime of regret.
  3. RELATIONSHIPS – that were damaged that are hard to repair. Like it or not, but “I’m sorry” doesn’t remove the pain or the memory of the hurt we’ve inflicted in our sin. No, you shouldn’t be in bondage to your sin, and once you repent and change and ask for forgiveness, you are indeed fully restored. And no one can ever take that away from you. Especially when God Himself moves your transgressions from you as far as the East is from the West. However, truth is, we often rip apart relationships due to our sin. And sometimes that damage simply cannot be mended or repaired.
  4. RECOLLECTION – the memories that just keep coming back! It’s a sobering reminder to seriously count the cost before we take any spiritual detour. For example, I remember having an abortion on December 7th, 1992. And for almost a decade I mourned that date every year as though the baby died again and again each year. It was a painful reminder of a deliberate choice I made for my own life. And the “what if’s” never go away fully.

That’s the danger of sin. You have to deal with the Damage to your Reputation; the Regrets for your Choices; the Beyond Repair Relationships that you’ve Damaged; and the Painful Recollection of Memories of your transgressions. However, hold on, for as bad as this may sound, there is still some good news!

I know you may find this hard to believe or receive, but the scars of our past aren’t all bad! Especially, if they remind us to stay away from sin because of its’ price tag. And it’s wonderful to know that God has forever erased those sins from His book. In fact, my scars remind me of His scars for me! He’s got the scars of the nail prints in His hands and feet from having been nailed to a cross to pay the penalty and take the hell for our sin. So even though we have to deal with many of the consequences from our bad choices, we can still rejoice in reconciliation and redemption!

You see, Jacob was blessed, changed, and received covenant promises, at the same place where he received his limp! And even after he received all of these wonderful blessings, his limp never left him!

And as much as you and I would love to pretend that our mistakes and deliberate sin, never happened, it did. And we hurt ourselves and others. And some of that hurt is engraved in them just as deep as my initials are in that fireplace. But in honesty, when I look at the consequences of my bad choices, my limp if you will, it reminds me of the struggle, it reminds me of the painful past, it reminds me that I hurt myself and a lot of others. It reminds me that I don’t want to repeat such a bad performance. It reminds me to do better. It reminds me that I CAN be better. It reminds me that my change was costly, but more important it reminds me that just because I walked away before, doesn’t mean I’ll walk away again! Which is why it also reminds me not to take the grace, mercy, favor and forgiveness of God for granted!

Jacob was blessed indeed, but his limp never left him! God has blessed me indeed over the years, but my ‘limp’ has never left me either, and the more I mature in God, the more excited I am for the limp that straightened my walk!

In addition, the limping ones receive a blessing according to Scripture: Zephaniah 3:19, “Behold, at that time I will deal with all those who afflict you; I will save the limping [ones] and gather the outcasts and will make them a praise and a name in every land of their shame.” (AMPC)

Thank God He still saves the limping ones! He hasn’t forgotten us. Even when we’ve forgotten Him.

Listen, if you’re anything like me, you’ve messed up, bad, and often! And not all of your consequences have escaped you. You still have the marks, scars, limps, and memories of how terribly you failed God and others. Well, instead of beating yourself over the head with your ‘limp’, let it be your reminder to walk right!  Let your ‘limp’ remind you that “If we live by the [Holy] Spirit, let us also WALK by the Spirit. [If by the Holy Spirit we have our life in God, let us go forward WALKING IN LINE, our conduct controlled by the Spirit.]” (Galatians 5:25 AMPC)

Let your ‘Limp’ in the Flesh remind you to Walk by the Spirit! Let your Consequences remind you to make better Choices in life!

The word “consequence” is defined as “a result or effect.” It’s Latin Origin, “consequential”, from “consequi” literally means “follow closely.” Don’t despise your ‘limp’ or the consequences because of it, instead let your limp and consequences follow you closely, they will remind you of the pain you don’t want to repeat! In a nutshell: It was my ‘limp’ that taught me how to straighten out my walk with God. My ‘limp’ taught me that I wanted to walk with Him (but that He wouldn’t entertain my sin along the journey). It taught me to think better, to speak better, to do better, to live better, and to be better.

No, we can’t go back and re-do or un-do, but we can go forward doing better. Some stuff you may just have to live with, but that’s not a bad thing when you learn with it.

Today, remember that Jacob wrestled with God and received a limp, but he was also blessed, changed, and received covenant promises at the place where he received that limp. Please understand, your ‘limp’ is not there to limit you, it’s there to remind you when the next opportunity to sin walks up, you should without question walk away. Your limp is to remind you to trust God, rely and depend on God, to hear and heed God.

Lastly, there are no wrestlers that enter a match and walk away without hurt, pain, bruising, sweat and blood! In other words, there’s a blessing that comes with your limp that is for your good, but it will not feel good! Listen to the Bible: And when he saw that he prevailed not against him, he touched the hollow of his thigh; and the hollow of Jacob’s thigh was out of joint, as he wrestled with him.” (vs. 25) Look at a few translations:
“…He touched his hip joint; and Jacob’s hip was DISLOCATED…” (AMP);
“…he grabbed Jacob’s thigh and TORE A MUSCLE in Jacob’s thigh…” (CEB);
“…he STRUCK Jacob on the hip and THREW IT OUT OF JOINT…” (CEV);
“… he STRUCK Jacob’s hip and KNOCKED IT OUT OF JOINT AT THE SOCKET…” (TLB);
“…he touched the socket of Jacob’s hip so that his hip was WRENCHED as he wrestled with the man..” (NIV)

I reiterate, the limp is for your good, but it will not feel good! You see, that word ‘wrench’ in the last translation is defined as, “to pull or twist suddenly and violently.” So yes, you’ll wrestle and prevail and receive the blessing, but man is it going to hurt, and the effects of it will stay with you for life! And still I say, today, let your Limp Straighten Out Your Walk With God! The Lesson Learned and the Blessing Received From the Limp is Worth the Wrestle!

“Why Help Matters?”

dose2 (2)

Ecclesiastes 4:9, “TWO are better than one…” (NIV)

Edward Farrell said, “Listening is rare. THERE ARE CERTAIN PEOPLE to whom we feel we can talk because they have such a deep capacity for hearing, not just our words, but hearing us as a person. They enable us to communicate on a level we’ve never reached before. They enable us to be as we’ve never been before. We will never truly know ourselves unless we find people who can listen, who can enable us to emerge, to come out of ourselves, to discover who we are. We cannot discover ourselves by ourselves.”

Note the words: “THERE ARE CERTAIN PEOPLE…who enable us to be as we have never been before.”

THESE ARE THE PEOPLE YOU NEED THE MOST!

With that said, consider the following questions to help you discover whether you’ve found your “CERTAIN PEOPLE…” or you NEED to Find Them:

1.    WHO COACHES YOU? What older, wiser, and more experienced brother or sister stands on the sidelines of your life and watches with the big picture in mind? Now keep in mind, coaches don’t run the race for you, THEY SIMPLY SET THE STANDARD FOR THE RACE AND MAKES A JUDGMENT ON YOUR PERFORMANCE! So who does this for you? Who mentors you? Who guides you? Who makes sure you don’t go outside the boundaries? Remember This: “A good coach will make his players see what they CAN BE rather than what they ARE” (Ara Parasheghian). Therefore, find yourself a coach that can see your successful future even in your present failures!

2.    WHO STRETCHES YOUR MIND? Who makes you wince as they expose the many faces of your ignorance; who will not let you get away with spiritual and intellectual superficiality? Who makes sure you don’t just play church? Who makes sure you don’t become complacent and lazy? Who makes sure your streams are always flowing (since stagnant water stinks!) Which makes me think of a quote I love that reads: “Too many people confine their exercise to jumping to conclusions, running up bills, stretching the truth, bending over backwards, lying down on the job, side-stepping responsibility and pushing their luck” (Author Unknown) You need someone who will give you a more beneficial exercise plan for your future! You need someone who refuses to let you settle, when they can stretch you to soar!

3.    WHO LISTENS TO AND ENCOURAGES YOUR DREAMS? Dreams are not intellectual propositions that must be proven. They are the work of visionaries; they are out-of-the-box, frequently awful and occasionally good. These are the folks who, when others laugh and say you’re trying to build castles in the air, remind you that God “…calls things that are not as though they were” (Romans 4:17). Another translation says: “…God…gives life to the dead and calls into being things that were not”. These are the people you need! People who make you see the house while in the apartment. People who make you see the church with no license to preach. People who make you see the car with no permit. People who make you see a fruitful marriage while contemplating divorce. These people share your hearts desires with you and even when they seem a little far-fetched, they still believe. Do you have people like that? Another quote I love says: “All men dream but not equally. Those who dream by night in the dusty recesses of their minds wake in the day to find that it was vanity; but the dreamers of the day are dangerous men, for they may act their dream with open eyes to make it possible” (T.E. Lawrence). You need people in your life that will awaken you from daydreaming and push you to make your dreams a reality! If you don’t have encouragers like that now, WHAT ARE YOU WAITING FOR? The birth of your dreams are at stake!

4.    WHO PROTECTS YOU? When the Christians in Jerusalem wanted nothing to do with the newly converted Saul of Tarsus, Barnabas acted as his advocate. Your voice alone is not enough! You need others to speak up for you. And this doesn’t imply weakness! “You obey the law of Christ when you offer each other a helping hand.” (Galatians 6:2  CEV). You need people in your life that will protect you from critics, gossips, back-biters and liars. People who protect all that you are in God, flaws and all. People who know your mistakes, but also know the price of forgiveness that was paid in Blood on your behalf. Therefore, they won’t sit around idly and let others use your past to abuse your future.  In other words, locate your Barnabas who will encourage you, stand up for you, support you and protect you. “The antidote for fifty enemies is just one faithful friend” (Aristotle). You don’t need the Tree to protect you from the heat of the sun, all you need is the Shade of the tree! Therefore, find you a Barnabas who you can stand in the shade of when the heat is on, they’ll stand before you and be a friendly protection.

5.    WHO SHARES YOUR TEARS? Mary was close enough to share Jesus’ tears in His most painful, life-draining moment. Who’s close enough to you to pick up on the signals (even the silent ones), to sense when fears and tears need to be shared? Yes, there are times when we need a pep talk or a shot in the arm, but there are also times when we need to be encouraged to lie low and realistically process our emotions. Who does that for you? Who cries with you, but has enough discernment and wisdom to know when you’ve cried enough? “Tears are the safety valve of the heart when too much pressure is laid on it” (Albert Smith). Which is why it’s so vital that you learn to surround yourself with people who won’t allow you to hide behind your name, your title, your position, your gifts, your anointing, your skills, your talents, your familiarity or comfortability, your business, your church, your ministry, your image etc. You need people that will say “Let it out!” People who know when to cry with you, for you and those who know when enough is enough and they hand you a tissue and say “Clean it up and get it together!These are the mentors who send you back to your wife or husband (whether the hurt was on their part or yours)! They do not however entertain you being lustfully messy with someone else because you’re caught up in your feelings. These mentors let you pour out your tears, but they also know how to help you turn off the water works and get a beneficial plan together so you can bounce back! If you haven’t found this mentor yet, locate them fast! And trust me, they’ll be easy to recognize! They’ll be the one who knows how to give you a healthy balance between your break-down and your break-through. They’re the ones that know how to discern when you need a listening ear, and when you need a verbal rebuke. They know when you need a pat on the back, and when you need a swift kick in the behind. They know when to help you resolve a conflict, and when to let that conflict beat you down because it was never your battle to begin with. Whatever you do, find this mentor!

6.    WHO REBUKES YOU? Even with 20/20 vision, one pair of eyes is never enough! You have blind spots! We all do. And Satan is always standing by ready to remind you of your good qualities. Why? Because pride is his expertise! And even the devil knows, “First pride, then the crash—the bigger the ego, the harder the fall.” (Proverbs 16:18 MSG). But a true friend exposes and challenges your self-seeking, self-pleasing, and self-dependence, and helps you to restore to God the authority you’ve robbed Him of! Who’s bold enough to do that for you? “Most of us can read the writing on the wall; we just assume it’s addressed to someone else” (Ivern Ball). You need a person that confirms that the writing on the wall is addressed personally to YOU! You need what David had, a NATHAN! Someone that will tell you to your face, “IT WAS YOU”! Someone who doesn’t care if you get mad, or stop speaking to them, someone who cares more about you being in right standing with God than right standing with them. Who does this for you? Who gets right in your face and rebukes your wrong? If no one, you my friend are in grave trouble!

7.    WHO SEEKS GOD WITH YOU? Praying together keeps us honest! Yes it’s only in the honesty of shared prayer that we draw closer to God, and to one another. The Bible says,: “Make this your common practice: “Confess your sins to each other…pray for each other so…you can live together whole and healed. The prayer of a person living right with God is something powerful to be reckoned with…” (James 5:16 MSG). You need someone in your life that is filled with the Word of God, Saturated with a Prayer Life, and Disciplined Enough to Fast Consistently! Someone who daily seeks the Face of God, and will therefore, provoke you to do the same. Someone who makes you want to live holy, live right and live honest (someone who will confront you if you’re not). Someone who helps you come clean with God and others. Someone who helps you be better today than you were yesterday, and better tomorrow than you were today. Who does that for you?  “When you knock, ask to see God – none of the servants” (Henry David Thoreau).  You need people in your life that help you get past seeking clergy collars and simply seek God instead! People who will not let you simply hold hands in a prayer circle, or wail and fall out at the altar, or wait in long lines for someone to lay hands on you. No, you need partners who will say sit and read the Word until the Word speaks back! Keep your eyes focused until you see God! Sit quiet until you hear God’s voice! Surround yourself with those who are not hung up on the Servants but on the Savior! Stick close to those who have little desire for seeking anything outside of seeking God! Do you have someone like that?

8.    WHO PLAYS WITH YOU? Does this sound Unimportant, even Carnal? Well it’s NOT! You must never let the seriousness of life override your need for recreation, a word that’s only understood when it’s hyphenated ‘RE-CREATION’. Ever notice how energized we are after some Rest, a walk in the park, a movie, or an evening out? In essence, the stress we endure daily has a way of breaking down and destroying our creativity, therefore we need time to focus on something less time constraining and mind exerting. Fresh ideas always flow after some playfulness. So don’t get so caught up in schedules and projects that you don’t take time out to enjoy life.A cheerful heart brings a smile to your face; a sad heart makes it hard to get through the day.” (Proverbs 15:13  MSG). Who makes sure you never miss recess? Human beings need pleasure the way they need vitamins” (Lionel Tiger). Just as recess is a part of a child’s day, make it a part of yours! Include people in your life who challenge you to fly a kite, run a race, go to a museum, a theme park, a picnic.  Surround yourself with people who interrupt your 9-5 with a silly joke or an out of key song that you sing to the top of your lungs, or a hideous dance move that will send your children seeking for help! Play a board game, walk on the beach, play dodge ball, tag, red light green light 1,2,3! LOL! Find someone to jump rope with, hop-scotch, or play jacks! Put your hair in 2 ponytails and tell your kids to go with you to the supermarket! LOL! See, many of you are laughing already and you haven’t even done these things, all you did was read them, and they made you laugh! Imagine how much fun you’ll have when you actually take a break and DO THEM? I remember a really good friend of mine from high school had 2 theme barbecues several years back and one of the themes was you had to come dressed in 1970’s attire! I’m still praying those pictures never make it to Facebook! LOL! Her other barbecue was a pajama theme! Sounds ridiculous, but the fun was unbelievable! Deanna is one of my dearest friends because she always makes me laugh and makes sure that I take a break in life, and actually LIVE! Think about it: After ALL Job went through…what does it say in the closing chapter? “AFTER THIS, JOB LIVED…” (Job 42:16 AMP). YES, BELIEVE IT OR NOT, AFTER ALL THAT JOB EXPERIENCED, THAT OTHER FOLKS WOULD’VE KILLED THEMSELVES OVER…HE ENDURES IT…AND IN THE END…JOB LIVED! In its entirety it reads like this: “AFTER THIS, JOB LIVED 140 YEARS, AND SAW HIS SONS AND HIS SON’S SONS, EVEN TO FOUR GENERATIONS. SO JOB LIVED, AN OLD MAN AND FULL OF DAYS” (Job 42:16-17 AMP) If you don’t have a Deanna like me, find one! She’s the key to many fun-filled days in your life! Someone Who Knows All That You’ve Endured And At The End Of It All, They Make You LIVE! Today, put your name in this Scripture and then LIVE! “After this, _____________ LIVED!” (Thanks Bishop James R. Chambers!)

You need to ask yourself today: “Who Coaches Me?; Who Stretches Me?; Who Listens to and Encourages My Dreams?; Who Protects Me?; Who Shares My Tears?; Who Rebukes Me?; Who Seeks God With Me (and for me)?; Who Plays With Me?Because all of these components are vital to a healthy and happy you!

In addition, this will cause you to do a thorough search of those in your life, and cause you to make necessary adjustments. You’ll begin to remove negative and pessimistic people. You’ll get rid of critical and judgmental folks. You’ll say goodbye to dream stealers and dream killers. You’ll discard unnecessary people who only pat you on the back and give your overly inflated ego more air. You’ll strike out those who don’t stretch you. You’ll pull away from those who don’t push you, protect you or play with you. You’ll become unsatisfied with those who are seeking people instead of seeking God. You’ll then begin to search for people who mean you well, Body, Soul and Spirit!

Now, That’s What You Call Living A Blessed and Well-Balanced Life!

So, Who Does This For You? Who Helps You? Because it Matters! If you can list them, CELEBRATE THEM, if you don’t have them, FIND THEM!

“Prayer is the Cure for Healing the Land”

dose4

2 Chronicles 7:14, “if my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, THEN will I hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and will heal their land.” (NIV)

Solomon’s temple was finally complete. The work of 70,000 laborers, 80,000 stone cutters, and 3,600 foremen—finished. Pure gold covered parts of the interior. Precious inlaid stones sparkled. The Ark of the Covenant inhabited the Holy of Holies. Only the presence of God was missing. So Solomon prays, “…Arise, O LORD God, to Your resting place…” (2 Chronicles 6:41 NKJV). And how did God respond? “When Solomon had finished praying, fire came down from heaven and consumed the burnt offering and the sacrifices; and the glory of the LORD filled the temple.” (2 Chronicles 7:1 NKJV). The people fell on their faces declaring, “…For He is good, For His mercy endures forever.” (2 Chronicles 7:3 NKJV). Then, after 15 days of celebration Solomon retreated to his palace.

BUT GOD WASN’T FINISHED SPEAKING!

God knows our tendency to forget His blessings and go our own way. And often times we get so caught up in what God did that we act as though He can’t and won’t do anything else. But God had so much more in store! But in order for Him to release it, there were some conditions that had to be met. And these conditions still remain today. And that word “Condition” is defined as “to set prior requirements on (something) BEFORE it can occur.” Its Latin Origin “Condicion” which means “Agreement”, comes from its root “Condicere” which means “To Agree Upon.” In other words, God was ready to do some great things for His people, HOWEVER, they had to agree with Him on the set requirements He put in place BEFORE they could attain the greater blessings! And what was His Set Requirements?

God said:

1.. “If MY PEOPLE, who are called by MY NAME.” – We must turn from Self-Promotion to God-Promotion. God makes it clear from the start, you are “…MY PEOPLE…” and you are called by “…MY NAME.However, somehow we’ve managed to high-jack God’s Church From Him! We’ve made all the programs, protocols, banquets, anniversaries, services, and the like about US…NOT HIM! But the 2 very important requirements for us to always remember is that it’s not about us, nor is it about our names! The Bible makes it clear: “If you look at us, you might well miss the brightness. We carry this precious Message around in the unadorned clay pots of our ordinary lives. That’s to prevent anyone from confusing God’s incomparable power with us. As it is, there’s not much chance of that. You know for yourselves that we’re not much to look at.” (2 Corinthians 4:7-12 MSG) And that’s the hard pill to swallow that the church keeps choking on: IT’S NOT ABOUT US OR OUR NAME! The first thing we need to get back to is FOCUS! And not on US, but on HIM!

2.. “Will HUMBLE THEMSELVES and pray.” – We must turn from Self-Reliance to God-Reliance. I love the fact that Humility comes BEFORE Prayer! In fact, I believe we would pray much differently, and effectively if we entered prayer in Humility first! Unfortunately, however, as a church, we’ve become very pompous, entitled, prideful, egotistical, and arrogant. We have 5-layer embroidered robes, rings the size of our fists, crosses bigger than the one Jesus hung on, and pulpit chairs that look like they belong in the throne room of God. Jesus had an inner circle of 3, yet we have an entourage of 30. Our hidden agenda and personal itinerary (masked as our motto and vision) is engraved on the building, our picture is in the vestibule, our names are always called, applauded and receive standing ovations that God doesn’t even get on Communion Sunday when it is His very blood and body in which we partake of that saved our lives. When did the church lose her humility? The Bible says: “Living as becomes you] with complete lowliness of mind (HUMILITY) and meekness (unselfishness, gentleness, mildness), with patience, bearing with one another and making allowances because you love one another.” (Ephesians 4:2 AMP); “Do nothing from factional motives [through contentiousness, strife, selfishness, or for unworthy ends] or prompted by conceit and empty arrogance. Instead, in the true spirit of HUMILITY (lowliness of mind) let each regard the others as better than and superior to himself [thinking more highly of one another than you do of yourselves].” (Philippians 2:3 AMP); “…What matters is not your outer appearance – the styling of your hair, the jewelry you wear, the cut of your clothes – but your inner disposition. Cultivate inner beauty, the gentle, gracious kind that God delights in…” (1 Peter 3:1-6 MSG). Church, before we get back to Prayer, let us first get back to Humility!

3.. “And seek MY FACE.” – We must turn from Self-Direction to God-Direction. Which makes me wonder, when exactly did we start to treat God like a genie in a bottle? We like to rub Him with phony praise, and eloquent prayers so He pops out the bottle and performs just for us. But when did we get so caught up in His Hand that we forgot about His Face, in the first place? The Bible says: “The Lord bless you and watch, guard, and keep you; The Lord make His FACE to shine upon and enlighten you and be gracious (kind, merciful, and giving favor) to you; The Lord lift up His [approving] COUNTENANCE upon you and give you peace (tranquility of heart and life continually)” (Numbers 6:24-26 AMP). The Message Bible says it like this: “God bless you and keep you, God smile on you and gift you, God look you full in the FACE and make you prosper.” (MSG). I’m amazed that this blessing speaks of the Lords FACE: “…shining…enlightening…being gracious, kind, merciful, favorable…approving countenance…peace…tranquility…smiling…gifting…and prosperity…” and all of it focuses on HIS FACE…NOT HIS HAND, yet His Children only seek…His Hand! Before you enter prayer with your long to-do-list for God, all of the blessings you need bestowed, the miracles you need performed, the debts you need cancelled, the sickness you need healed, the monies you need deposited in your bank account within the next 15 minutes, how about you try instead to enter in prayer with Worship?! NOT entering in hoping that God makes it Worth Your While! No, just enter in with Worship. The word “Worship” is defined as “the feeling or expression of reverence and adoration for a deity; great admiration or devotion.” Its Old English Origin literally means “worthiness or acknowledgement of worth.” But the BIBLE defines it better! Revelation 4:10, reads, “At the same time the twenty-four elders knelt down before the One sitting on the throne. And as they WORSHIPED the One Who lives forever, they placed their crowns in front of the throne…” (CEV). That word “Worship” is “Proskuneo” (pros-koo-neh-oh) and it’s from the words “Pros” meaning “Toward” and “Kuneo” meaning “To Kiss.” And unlike the Pope, the Lord has not asked us to kiss the ring on his hand…but to kiss His Face…IN WORSHIP! Our worship is how we show the value of the Lords worth to us! Listen, while so many are waiting for the Lord to hand them Prosperity from His Hand, the Blessing of Numbers 6 informs us that Prosperity comes from His Face! Remember: Seek HIS FACE!

4.. “And TURN from their wicked ways.” We must turn from Self-Indulgence to Self-Examination. I love the word “Turn” because it’s defined as “to move into a different position, especially so as to face or move in the opposite direction.” And that word “Opposite” has its Latin Origin “Oppositus”, from the root “Opponere”, and means “To Be Set Against.” Now, regardless to popular belief, saying you’ve turned from the old to the new, and actually showing evidence of it are two totally different things! Because to “Turn” requires Action! It’s to move into a different position and face the direct opposite direction and to set yourself against, or to become an enemy of your former standing. In essence, if you were used to going South, you now go North, if you were used to going West, you now go East! When you become a new creature, you don’t return to your old crap! You turn, you change direction! The Bible says: “Therefore if any person is [ingrafted] in Christ (the Messiah) he is a new creation (a new creature altogether); the old [previous moral and spiritual condition] has passed away. Behold, the fresh and new has come!” (2 Corinthians 5:17 AMP); “We were buried therefore with Him by the baptism into death, so that just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glorious [power] of the Father, so we too might [habitually] live and behave in newness of life.” (Romans 6:4 AMP); “Bring forth fruit that is consistent with repentance [let your lives prove your change of heart.” (Matthew 3:8 AMP). Church, we’ve talked about changing and turning long enough, now is the time to actually do it! Why? Because the Bible warns: “So any person who knows what is right to do but does not do it, to him it is sin.” (James 4:17 AMP); “But be doers of the Word [obey the message], and not merely listeners to it, betraying yourselves [into deception by reasoning contrary to the Truth].” (James 1:22 AMP). In a nutshell: Today is your day to make a Turn for the better!

And after all of that what happens next? Well, the Bible says: “THEN”!

…THEN will I hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and will heal their land!” I love the word “Then” because it’s defined as “After This or After That“! So after WE, THE CHURCH, fulfill the pre-conditions of God……”THEN” Happens!

People of God, the turn-around this country needs, is dependent on if and when WE make the decision to turn back to God! The change doesn’t happen when unbelievers turn to God, but GOD said, “IF MY PEOPLE…CALLED BY MY NAME.” Birthing a significant, effective, change for the better has always begun with GOD’S PEOPLE.

When the Day of Pentecost had fully come, they were all with one accord in one place. And suddenly there came a sound from heaven, as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled the whole house where they were sitting. THEN there appeared to them divided tongues, as of fire, and one sat upon each of them. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.” (Acts 2:1-4 NKJV) And things were NEVER the same!

If there is going to be a National turn around, it has to begin with “MY PEOPLE…CALLED BY MY NAME.

And when you look at the 3-fold blessing that God will bestow it makes you wonder, what are we waiting for?!

  1. …THEN will I hear from heaven…”;
  2. …and will forgive their sin…”;
  3. “… and will heal their land!

And all we have to do, as God’s people, called by His name, is to obey the Set Requirements:

  1. Humble Ourselves;
  2. Pray;
  3. Seek His Face; and
  4. Turn From Our Wicked Ways

‘THEN’…AFTER THAT…God Promises to Hear From Heaven; Forgive Sin and Heal the Land! I reiterate, CHURCH, what are we waiting for?

Other translations of the text read like this:

“If My people, who are called by My name, shall humble themselves, pray, seek, crave, and require of necessity My face and turn from their wicked ways, then will I hear from heaven, forgive their sin, and heal their land.” (AMP);

“if My people who are called by My name put away their pride and pray, and look for My face, and turn from their sinful ways, then I will hear from heaven. I will forgive their sin, and will heal their land.” (NLV);

“Then if my people who are called by my name will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, I will hear from heaven and will forgive their sins and restore their land.” (NLT).

But I think the one I love most is this version: “If my own people will humbly pray and turn back to me and stop sinning, then I will answer them from heaven. I will forgive them and make their land fertile once again.” (CEV).

It amazes me that we often think of the “The World” and “Unbelievers” as the problem to why there’s sin, no forgiveness and no healing. But GOD says, “…IF MY OWN PEOPLE…TURN BACK TO ME AND STOP SINNING…”

CHURCH, HE’S TALKING TO US! THE WORLD AND UNBELIEVERS ARE NOT THE PROBLEM, WE ARE! IF WE DARE TO GET BACK TO GOD AND THE WAYS OF GODLINESS, AND STOP ABUSING GRACE WHILE WE CONTINUE TO SIN, GOD WILL HEAR, FORGIVE AND HEAL! AND THE ONLY THING HOLDING UP THE PROCESS IS A PRAYERLESS CHURCH! WE ARE HIS PEOPLE, WE ARE HIS CHILDREN, WE HAVE THE ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITY FOR BEING SALT AND LIGHT AS WELL!

“You are the SALT of the earth, but if salt has lost its taste (its strength, its quality), how can its saltiness be restored? It is not good for anything any longer but to be thrown out and trodden underfoot by men. You are the LIGHT of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden. Nor do men light a lamp and put it under a peck measure, but on a lampstand, and it gives light to all in the house. Let your light so shine before men that they may see your moral excellence and your praiseworthy, noble, and good deeds and recognize and honor and praise and glorify your Father Who is in heaven.” (Matthew 5:13-16 AMP).

We Have to Start Impacting the World, Instead of Letting the World Impart Into Us! Remember: Their Change Depends On Our Change! So Let’s Determine Today to Change and Get Back to Being a Nation of God’s People, Who PRAY! Why? Because…

“God appeared to Solomon that very night and said, “I ACCEPT YOUR PRAYER; yes, I have chosen this place as a temple for sacrifice, a house of worship. If I ever shut off the supply of rain from the skies or order the locusts to eat the crops or send a plague on my people, and my people, my God-defined people, respond by humbling themselves, PRAYING, seeking my presence, and turning their backs on their wicked lives, I’ll be there ready for you: I’ll listen from heaven, forgive their sins, and restore their land to health. From now on I’m alert day and night to the PRAYERS offered at this place. Believe me, I’ve chosen and sanctified this Temple that you have built: My Name is stamped on it forever; my eyes are on it and my heart in it always. As for you, if you live in my presence as your father David lived, pure in heart and action, living the life I’ve set out for you, attentively obedient to my guidance and judgments, then I’ll back your kingly rule over Israel—make it a sure thing on a sure foundation. The same covenant guarantee I gave to David your father I’m giving to you, namely, ‘You can count on always having a descendant on Israel’s throne.’” (7:12-18 MSG)

Isn’t it Absolutely Amazing the Things God Will Do, If Only His People Would Simply PRAY?

“Desperate and soul-stirring prayers result in answers. When God is sought in desperation, He responds.” (Jim Cymbala)

“I think Christians fail so often to get answers to their prayers because they do not wait long enough on God.” (E.M. Bounds)

“When you pray, your prayers are heard by the same God who answered Moses’ prayer for water in the desert; the God who gave Abraham and His barren wife a son; and the God who made the slave Joseph second in power only to Pharaoh. Nothing is impossible for God when you pray and believe for His answer to come.” (Francis Chan)

“We tend to use prayer as a last resort, but God wants it to be our first line of defense.” (Oswald Chambers)

“Time spent in prayer is never wasted.” (Francis Fenelon)

“Prayer is simply a two-way conversation between you and God.” (Billy Graham)

“Prayer should be the key of the day and the lock of the night.” (George Herbert)

“To be a Christian without prayer is no more possible than to be alive without breathing.” (Martin Luther)

“Prayer is putting oneself in the hands of God.” (Mother Teresa)

“Prayer is not just for times of trouble.” (Thomas S. Monson)

“The greatest tragedy of life is not unanswered prayer but unoffered prayer.” (F.B. Meyer)

“If the only prayer you ever say is ‘thank you’, that will be enough.” (Eckhart Tolle)

“Any concern too small to be turned into a prayer is too small to be made into a burden.” (Corrie Ten Boom)
